Faktograf.hr selects topics by following media reports and public discussion on social networks, and we try to answer the questions of our readers as much as possible. We prioritise topics of public interest as well as exposing widespread misinformation that endangers public health or serves to manipulate electoral and political processes. Faktograf.hr continuously monitors statements by Croatian politicians and political figures. Faktograf.hr also monitors claims placed in the public space by digital media. In the Ocjena točnosti (Accuracy Check) section, the claims made by politicians and political actors whose accuracy can be measured by objective facts are assessed. In the Razotkriveno (Exposed) section, the accuracy of claims made in the public space by digital media and social media users are assessed in collaboration with Meta, through their Third Party Fact-Checking programme. In the Pod povećalom (In Focus) section, we provide in-depth analyses of important political and social topics. We research each topic in great detail, we present various perspectives present in the public discussion, we identify the relevant facts and distinguish them from presented opinions and spins. Our approach to topics is critical, but also constructive - we point to problems and present possible solutions.

The independence in editorial policy of the Faktograf.hr is guaranteed by the Editorial Statute. Through its work, the Faktograf.hr ensures impartiality and multiple sources of information and does not unjustifiably focus on individual political parties and candidates on the political spectrum. Should an exception be made for any reason, the stated family connection should be clear.

Faktograf.hr internet portal wishes to reduce mistakes in its work to a minimum. However, even with all precautions, mistakes can happen, and it then corrects them immediately upon learning of such mistakes, i.e. as soon as possible. The public can write to the e-mail address [email protected] with a request for correction or amendment of a published article. Faktograf.hr internet portal responds to all e-mails containing requests for correction or amendment, which are explained and supported by relevant sources, as soon as possible. The Editor-in-Chief evaluates the requests for corrections or amendments and informs the journalist who worked on the article about their decision.

Depending on the type of mistake and other cases that require changing the published text, the corrections and amendments are made in the following manner:

1 Factual mistakes

In the rare cases when it transpires that the originally published text contained factual mistakes, the Faktograf.hr internet portal will swiftly correct the mistakes within the text. The information regarding the corrections, as well as an explanation of the circumstances leading to the mistake will be added to the text, in order to provide the readers with a transparent insight into which information was originally incorrect. The information regarding the correction of factual mistakes in the original text is published at the top of the text, in italics.

2 Typographic, grammatical, or orthographical mistakes

When correcting mistakes such as a typo, or other types of orthographical or grammatical mistakes, there is no note added to the text stating the subsequent change.

3 Amendments

Sometimes, texts are amended with information considered to be relevant for the article, with the purpose of informing the readers about them. Such practice is used, for example, in relation to answers to an inquiry which were obtained only after the publication of the article or in relation to information that, for other reasons, was not available or known at the moment of publishing the article. The information on the amendment which does not influence the conclusion of the original fact-check, i.e. the article, is published at the bottom of the text, in italics.

Should information appear subsequently, which would significantly influence the conclusion of the original fact-check, i.e. the article on whether a claim was true or untrue, such amendments are published at the top of the text, also in italics.

4 Subsequent clarifications

Sometimes, changes are added to the text with the purpose of clarifying the article’s conclusions more precisely. These can, for example, be changes to an insufficiently clear title or sentence construction. The information of such clarifications of claims from the original article is published at the bottom of the article, in italics.

In exceptional cases, if the original content in which the mistake was made can no longer be edited, the Faktograf.hr internet portal will transmit the correction in the same format and in the same place as the original, so that as many readers of the original as possible can see the error and the corrected version.

The public has the opportunity to submit a complaint related to Faktograf’s work if they believe that the Faktograf.hr internet portal in its work violates the provisions of the IFCN Code of Principles, by means of a form whose link is published on the Faktograf.hr internet portal. 3.2.D. Anonymise any personal information that could allow the harassment of people (i.e. at least partially concealing telephone numbers, IDs or passports, bank account numbers, email addresses…).

3.2.E. When appropriate and possible, a right-of-reply should be offered to any named person or organisation who is the source of the inaccurate claim and/or is the subject of significant criticism or allegations.

3.2.F. Put in place measures that aim to address the risk of trauma or harassment experienced by staff as a result of the operation’s activities, including but not limited to providing training to prevent and identify symptoms.

3.3.A. Correct every known mistake promptly with a correction note in the same publication in which the error was made; if the error is only typographical, grammatical or stylistic, a correction note is not needed.

3.3.B. When the original publication in which the mistake was made is not editable, disseminate the correction in the same format and channel as the original so that as far as possible users of the original see the correction and the corrected version.

3.3.E. Make available and easily accessible on their websites a corrections policy and a record of the corrections published over the previous year in the first application for EFCSN membership and of the previous two years upon renewal.

3.3.F. Include in their corrections policy, available and easily accessible on their websites, a detailed account of how they assess requests for corrections.

3.3.G. Offer audiences direct channels to request a correction, within the corrections policy on their website.

3.3.I. Undergo an internal and documented annual review of published corrections to determine whether methodological and procedural changes should be made to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.

3.3.H. Inform audiences of the possibility of submitting a complaint to the EFCSN under the terms of article 6 with a link to the complaint form.

4.1.A. Make available and easily accessible on their website a statement that sets out the applicant’s organisational structure and makes clear how and by whom editorial control is exercised.

4.1.B. Make available and easily accessible on their website regularly updated information related to the ownership and legal status of the operation and/or parent organisation. People or entities holding over 5% of the shares must be disclosed (see template in Annex 4).

4.1.C. Make available and easily accessible on their website regularly updated information related to the governance of the operation and/or the parent organisation (see template in Annex 5).

4.1.D. Provide proof of the ownership, legal status and governance of the organisation to the external assessors

4.1.E. Make available and easily accessible on their website regularly updated information about the identity of the editors or decision makers behind the operation, including any relevant previous roles.

4.1.F. Make available and easily accessible on their website regularly updated information about the positions held by all staff involved in the fact-checking operation’s editorial output, including any relevant previous roles.

4.1.G. Make available and easily accessible on their website a statement setting out the operation’s mission, values and internal guidelines in place to protect its independence.

4.1.H. Make available and easily accessible on their website the organisation’s bylaws, understood as the rules or statutes that govern the members of an organisation.

4.2.A. Disclose all income sources contributing 1% or 5.000 euros (whichever the higher), from the most recent annual accounts when joining and the last two annual accounts when renewing membership, to external assessors and the Governance Body

4.2.D. Make available and easily accessible on their website an updated declaration of all unpaid significant commitments made to other organisations (see Annex 9).

4.2.F. Make available and easily accessible on their website goods and services they receive from external sources, including paid subscriptions or free access to tools, software and/or advertising, that make a material difference to their finances (5% of net income).

4.2.H. Make available and easily accessible on or from their website the full annual accounts of their organisation for each year since joining the EFCSN.
